Employee Stress & Workplace Conflict

Stressed WomanOne thing that has not decreased in the current economy is the effect of employee stress in the workplace. It is estimated that the total cost of employee stress in the United States is well over $300 billion annually.

Stress results in increased health costs, absenteeism, presenteeism, distraction, workplace errors & accidents, workplace conflict, and litigation.

Once of the greatest personal stressors is a lack of control. Whether at work or in personal lives, individuals who perceive little or no control in their participation or the outcome of events or efforts experience high levels of stress.

Most recognize that conflict, of any sort, results in an increase in stress. Conflict is unpleasant and it is not uncommon for individuals to go to great efforts to avoid it. Unfortunately these avoidant efforts can increase a lack of control and, as a result, increase the stress experienced.

It is not uncommon for a person in a conflict to seek a person – such as an attorney – to represent them in the resolution of the conflict thereby removing the involved individual from directly addressing the conflict. This, however, can result in increased stress as it increases the lack of control in participation and the outcome, as well as often prolonging the conflict and increasing the cost.

Role of Mediation

Employers traditionally look at mediation solely in terms of workplace conflict. Addressing or responding to employee stress has been relegated to EAPs or other human resource programs. Adopting an employee mediation program has not traditionally been seen as an option.

Mediation can be an effective first line intervention for most types of conflicts. Those who choose to mediate choose to intervene in their own conflict – taking control of both their participation and outcome in a controlled positive environment.

Employee Mediation Benefit

CFR Mediation’s Employee Mediation Benefit (EMB) provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional employer efforts to address employee stress.

Our mediation benefit program provides employers with a cost effective means to address employee conflict-related stress reducing the effect of personal and workplace disputes on employee productivity.
