The Role of the CFR Mediation Coordinator

July 12th, 2009 - Erin Johnston, MSW, LCSW

Mediation CoordinatorCFR Mediation is different than other mediation providers.  Each and every case is assigned a CFR mediation coordinator.

So often those in dispute have strong emotional reactions to one another.  Perhaps this explains the tendency to turn to attorneys to resolve our conflicts; unfortunately, although this may ease the immediate discomfort, all too often it prolongs and aggravates the conflict.

By design, CFR addresses the problematic emotions that prevent individuals from accessing mediation and controlling the resolution of their own conflicts.  The CFR Mediation Coordinator respond to this through the provision of conflict coaching.

Although each has a minimum of a masters degree in a behavioral health field, the CFR Mediation Coordinator does not provide therapy or counseling, but does provide ongoing coaching, as needed, to case participants.  The purpose is to remove the emotional barriers that prevent successful mediation.  Like the mediator, they do not take sides and share the fundamental goal of efficiently and effectively assisting those in dispute resolve the issue.

By making these services available to every client, we remove much of the emotional barrier to mediation, creating an environment that promotes mediation success.

Clients of CFR do not have to utilize the services of a mediation coordinator, but their expertise is available if needed.
