Mediation as an Employee Benefit

Employee MediationEmployers should consider providing their employees with an Employee Mediation Benefit.  A mediation benefit is more than just a means to resolve workplace disputes. A unique employee benefit, ADR services provide employees and their families with a means to resolve the interpersonal issues that create stress and distraction in their lives and in the workplace.

Employers know that many personal conflicts and interpersonal issues including divorce and child custody disputes experienced by their employees negatively affect productivity and general absenteeism. Wellness programs such as employee assistance programs (EAP), some of which include legal referral, have been developed over the last couple of decades to mitigate the effects of personal problems in the workplace. However, employee assistance programs are limited in their ability to truly intervene and resolve the presenting stressor.

Mediation as an employee benefit allows employees and their families to access effective conflict resolution services services for any personal issue, not just workplace conflicts. Employees and their families can use the available dispute resolution services to address personal issues such as divorce and child custody issues, disputes with neighbors, general family issues, contracts, and other conflicts that otherwise stress and distract them and fellow employees in the workplace. Promoting the use of mediation as an effective and less painful alternative will have the added benefit of encouraging employees to actively address the conflicts in their lives in a conscious and proactive manner – lessening the general level of discord.

As an employee benefit, a comprehensive conflict resolution benefit goes further than traditional EAPs and wellness programs in actually resolving employees’ problem:  providing solutions and answers instead of just a supportive ear. In contrast to legal referral programs or intervention, the solutions from mediation are quick, effective, and affordable.
