Civil Unions vs. Catholic Charities – Gay Adoption

AdoptionIllinoiscivil union law will be in effect June 1, 2011. The law gives gay and lesbian couples the same rights as heterosexual married couples. This means that gay and lesbian couples who have committed to one another through the closest option to marriage legally available in Illinois – a state recognized civil union – should be able to adopt through state-sponsored adoption agencies.

In Illinois, Catholic Charities’ foster care and adoption programs serve more than 3,000 children, which is approximately twenty percent (20%) of services. These programs are largely funded by the state of Illinois, who pays Catholic Charities $30 million annually. (more…)

Irwin and ChristieIt seems that the Broken Arrow City Council has figured out a way to meet the needs of its resident while not changing the laws related to exotic pets.

The Broken Arrow City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to create an exotic animal ordinance exemption that would allow Christie Carr to keep Irwin the red kangaroo within city limits under certain conditions.

Carr is unable to work because of her health and has found comfort in the companionship of Irwin, whom she met while volunteering at a local animal sanctuary on the advice of her therapist.

Catholic ChurchIn Chicago, a workplace conflict is being played out in a very public arena.

The leader of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, Cardinal George, has suspended a popular Chicago priest Reverend Michael Pfleger. The suspension comes after a workplace conflict surrounding the potential reassignment of the reverend, which was publicly discussed by Rev. Pfleger on a national radio program. In response to the Pfleger’s comments on the Tavis Smiley show, the cardinal felt that the process was “short-circuited” and opted to suspend the pastor. (more…)

Mediating ADAAn interesting lawsuit in Chicago serves as an example of the negative side of litigation: cost, time, emotional toll, and lack of control. It seems more likely that all sides would win through mediation.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago condominium owner, Mary Jo Stevens, who has a long history of debilitating panic attacks, has found great relief through the use and constant companionship of a 10-pound therapeutic dog named Boo. She reports that in the 14 months she has owned Boo her panic attacks have decreased from multiple times a week to about once a week. (more…)

Accused Bully Awarded $5 Million In Libel Case

BullyingIn December 2009, The Virginian-Pilot published an article about an assault on a family, the Bristols. According to court records one night in 2009 Kevin Webb, then 17 years old, and his older brother Brian went to the house of schoolmate Patrick Bristol and assaulted both he and his 53 year old father, Robert.

The police were called and both Kevin and Brian were charged as adults. Kevin’s charges were malicious wounding, assault and trespassing. (more…)

Perez HiltonIn October of 2010 popular celebrity blogger “Perez Hilton” did an amazing thing. He pledged to change part of his trademark – to stop bullying celebrities through his blog – and he followed through. Perez Hilton stopped bullying and nothing happened. His readership did not decrease. People did not become outraged; for the most part no one seemed to notice. Which is fine – and supports the idea that bullying is not always purposeful and is a behavior that is appropriate for intervention. (more…)

AllAmericanHeadshots.com - NavyOn January 1, 2011 the Virginian-Pilot greeted the new year with a story of videos produced, written, and featuring Naval Captain Owen Honors, at the time commander of the USS Enterprise. Four days later, Capt. Honors, 49, had been relieved of his command and essentially put on desk duty pending further investigation. The cited reason: “profound lack of good judgment and professionalism”.

The Virginian-Pilot article reports that anonymous men and women, who served on the ship at the time the videos, were created and aired, complained immediately to no avail. (more…)

Workplace Bullying & ViolenceAs potential passengers worry about privacy issues related to the newly installed full-body scanners at our airports, it is interesting to consider the experience of TSA personnel being trained on the use of the machines.

Part of the training exercise included, apparently, TSA staff or at least some TSA screeners (TSOs) being scanned by the new imaging devices as their coworkers and supervisors looked on at the resultant image through the viewer. (more…)

Culture of Conflict ResolutionThis week Notre Dame University has had to respond to public scrutiny as to whether it has or has not responded to an allegation of rape by one of its football players. It seems that the family of the alleged victim, who committed suicide shortly after, is outraged, among other related issues, by the lack of the university’s communication with local police or any apparent investigation.
